Are you left-handed?

Left-handedness

About one tenth of the population are left-handed (estimates vary between five and twenty per cent). One cannot know the exact proportion since there are no official statistics on it. Moreover, it is not that straightforward to say who is left-handed and who is not.

Commonly person who uses his or her left hand for writing with a pen is considered left-handed. However, people use their hands for diverse tasks and many people change hand from one task to another. Hence, although only few people are exclusively lefthanders some are more left-handed than others.

About this site

I opened this site in December, 2002, to collect here some information on left-handedness. Since there is currently a vast amount of information on left-handedness in English, I no more add English-language writings to the site. However, the already published ones are archived here.

The layout of the site was renewed on Lefthanders' Day 2009 (August, 13th).

Name of the site is a question ('Are you left-handed?') since originally there was a questionnaire asking that on the front page. The question is now removed but the results are still available.

This site is made by Niko Lipsanen, a left-handed geographer from Helsinki, Finland.
